The livelihood component of short term cash crop and livestock will provide food and income during the 5 year cashew maturing period. The beneficiaries are 5000 low income and marginal farmer families.

The impact of this successful project will enhance the living standard of the island community with a more equitable distribution of new income and food resources among the 5000 beneficiary families which consists the greater population of the Lubang Island.

World Community Service Exchange Project

Philippines

Lubang Island—W04904

The agricultural town of Lubang is dedicated to growing rice due to the flat and low mountainous slopes. The local club would like to provide a new source of income for the inhabitants through cashew disbursal and backyard farming. Because it will take 3 to 5 years for the seeds to mature, the 5,000 low income families will be provided with short term cash crops of vegetables, banana, papaya fruit trees and livestock (native chicken, piglets and goats). The club will distribute all seeds to beneficiaries.

Resources required: US$79,675 total. US$39,837/cashew seedlings, US$1,771/training, US$7,082/planting kit, US$8,853/livestock assistance, US$22,132/water well and pump.
